Our Favorite Houseplants For Every Room Of Your Home

Posted by Mekenna Malan on

What's our favorite home decor and mood-booster all in one?  Houseplants! In addition to having scientifically-proven benefits like increasing concentration and productivity, reducing stress levels and purifying your air, bringing plants indoors is a great way to liven up your space. Read below to discover our six favorite houseplants for every room of your home, all suited for the beginner plant parent (and a couple of our favorite pots to put them in, too)!

The Entryway - Devil's Ivy

Devil's Ivy (Epipremnum aureum) is considered a great houseplant for beginners, as it is fairly difficult to kill. The beautiful vines will grow over 10 feet long if you let them, making this a perfect plant to place in a hanging basket or on the edge of a shelf. We love the cascading effect of these full, heart-shaped leaves and the way they seem to welcome guests in from the entryway.

Light: Indirect sun. Bright light may cause yellow spots on leaves.
Water: Moderate. Wait for soil to thoroughly dry out before re-wetting.
Pet-Friendly: Mild to moderately toxic.

Living Room - Zanzibar Gem

The Zanzibar Gem (Zamioculcas), often called the "ZZ Plant," adds eye-catching, glossy green texture that looks great in any style of home. This houseplant is super hardy and will thrive even if you forget to water it for a while. We love placing this plant in a room with a lot of foot traffic, like the living room, where its beauty can be enjoyed every day!

Light: Low to medium indirect sun. Leaves will burn in high or direct sunlight.
Water: Infrequently. Make sure the soil is dry at least 2" down before re-wetting.
Pet-Friendly: Moderate toxicity when ingested.

Kitchen - English Ivy

Elegant and classic, English Ivy (Hedera Helix) is a favorite among plant owners for its ability to grow quickly indoors or out. This vine will climb any available surface, so it is much easier to manage when placed indoors. English Ivy will add a graceful look to your space. We love placing it in the kitchen, where it's natural texture shines next to fresh ingredients being prepared.

Light: Partial to full shade. Keep it away from the windows (and on your kitchen counter instead)!
Water: Moderate. Water whenever the potted soil gets dry.
Pet-Friendly: Toxic when ingested. Keep out of reach of pets!

Bedroom - Nerve Plant

The Nerve Plant (Fittonia argyroneura) is generally compact, adorable, and perfect for a bedside table. These striking leaves can range from green to pink or red, and are detailed with intricate white veins. Leaves will grow low, but can reach over 18 inches in length. This dainty plant will add unique color and texture to your space!

Light: Bright and indirect. Not enough light will cause any pink leaves or white veins to fade back to regular green.
Water: Moderate. Allow soil to dry between waterings.
Pet-Friendly: Non-toxic!

Bathroom - Snake Plant

While all the plants on this list are easy for a beginner houseplant owner to care for, the Snake Plant (Sansevieria trifasciata) is the easiest. While there are many varieties to choose from, most Snake Plants feature strikingly two-toned or striped upright leaves. These succulent plants will add bold texture to any room of your home! The Snake Plant has the ability to remove toxins from the air, making it a must-have plant on the bathroom vanity of any beauty guru.

Light: Bright and indirect. This plant will be fine in low light, but will grow more slowly and less vibrantly.
Water: Infrequent. Over-watering will cause the plant to rot.
Pet-Friendly: Mild toxicity when ingested.

Dining Room - Bird of Paradise

Move over, traditional house plants - the Bird of Paradise (Paradisaeidae) is here to stand out! This plant grows quickly and will put on a show in any space. It really shines in a room where you're making a statement - like in the dining room during a dinner party! Placing this plant in the corner will make all your mealtimes feel exotic.

Light: Any level of light is tolerated, but this plant will flourish in a sunny spot.
Water: Moderate. Allow the soil to dry out between waterings.
Pet-Friendly: Moderate toxicity when ingested.
